Caroline Ann Smeed [sm.11.6]

Caroline Ann Smeed was the sixth child of Edward Smeed & Sarah Ann Hayward born September 15th, 1868 at East Grinstead & christened November 29th, 1868 at St. Swithun’s Church, East Grinstead.

In 1871 Caroline (known as Carrie) was living at Fairlight Cottage, East Grinstead with her parents & 1 brother & 3 sisters.

Carrie & her family were living at Fairlight Farm in 1881 where her father was a farmer.

In 1890 Carrie was bridesmaid for her sister Kate, along with another sister, Alice.

Carrie was still living at home in 1891 at the same address.

Carrie was closely involved with her sister Kate & her husband Samuel Reuben Schofield.  In 1896 all 3 moved into a house which Samuel had taken at Garret Lane, Lower Tooting, along with an heiress, Ursula Cockburn-Dickinson.  They were all involved with a plan to open a cat & dog business in Tooting.  However things went awry when Samuel & Ursula disappeared together & were never heard of again!  (For details of this story see Kate’s page [sm.11.3])

By 1901 Carrie was working as a nurse & domestic for Sarah & Henry Gower, a tobacconist, at 27 Scarbrook Rd, Croydon, Surrey.

In 1911 Carrie was still a nurse & domestic, now living at the Lodge, Aspley Guise, Bedfordshire.  She was employed by Annie & Harry Morduant, a gentleman.

The 1939 register shows Carrie living at 79 Yew Tree Rd, Southborough, Kent.  She was described as being of private means.

Carrie died in Oct-December 1942, her death being registered in Maidstone, Kent.
